History
The name Thembalethu is a Xhosa word, meaning “Our Hope.” The township is situated on the Garden Route, about 8km outside of the developing city of George, in the Western Cape, in South Africa.

Thembalethu became part of the George Municipality in 1995. Prior to that the community was regarded as a separate adjoining town, together with the Pacaltsdorp community.

Population
According to Census 2011, Thembalethu has an estimated population of 43 103 people residents. This represents 22% of the total George municipality’s population. Between 2001 and 2011 the population in Thembalethu grew by an estimated 10 422 more people. This is according to the George Municipality’s Thembalethu Urban Upgrade Plan.
